For years, Ted Oberg of the ABC affiliate in Houston and I have run into each other at political events, worked together, then signed off with, "we gotta get a drink some time."
A few months ago, we were talking when I said, "you know, instead of never getting that drink, let's lock it down. We can both drive from our respective homes and meet halfway in Smithville at the Bone Spirits Distillery and watch that drink get made before we lift a glass. Better yet, bring a cameraman and make a story out of it."
Ted was convinced his editors would never go for it, but he wafted a trial balloon. Surprisingly to him, they went for it and it was time to build a story. I helped him connect w/Jeff Peace at Bone Spirits, recommended he join me at Garrison Brothers where I was scheduled to be a volunteer bottler and encouraged him to track down the Yellow Rose folks.
The resulting story is a great take on the emergence of the Texas whiskey industry, marred only by an appearance from yours truly. Click the picture to watch.
Enjoy.
